Their debut album $O$ was made available as a free download on their official website, and in late 2009, South African cinematographer Rob Malpage co-directed (with Ninja), co-produced (with Zef Films and Die Antwoord) and filmed the video for their single "Enter the Ninja", which became a viral video on the internet nine months later, delivering millions of hits to the official Die Antwoord website, eventually crashing the website's server. Ninja and Yolandi are also known as conceptual artists Watkin Tudor Jones and Anri du Toit, who were part of the South African hip-hop scene for many years, fronting acts such as MaxNormal.TV and The Constructus Corporation, before assuming their current roles. Formed of rappers Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Tek, they are noted for their striking image, incorporating elements of "zef" culture described as modern and trashy, appropriating out-of-date, discarded cultural elements, especially those of working class white Africans residing in Cape Town. South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for “The Answer”) started in Cape Town in 2008. Their fourth offering Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid is due out September 16 th via Die Antwoord’s own Zef Recordz. It's time for some shameless South African techno as Die Antwoord comes to Hollywood Palladium on Thursday 22nd September 2016! Ninja and Yolandi will be bringing their wild, larger-than-life “Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid Tour” to the stage and it will blow your minds!!! Touring in support of their recently released EP Suck On This, and their upcoming album We Have Candy, the world-famous Zef superstars will mess you up – are you ready?! Fear not! Yolandi hastily cleared things up saying that their fifth album will be their final, but not their finale (and there’s a DA feature film on the horizon?!) Over the past few days, and due to contextual issues surrounding a recent interview with Ninja, there have been worries over the end of Die Antwoord. Although well worth a watch, the question has been raised…are they beginning to cross too many lines? His psychologist had a few choice words to say about the video, basically claiming they should be ashamed of themselves and that are just out to make money on the tragedy. Although on the surface it seems like some more cute Yolandi antics with drugs and dancing set to lyrics like “you’re so cute like Pikachu,” this creation actually pokes fun at Oscar Pistorius.

Here we have the latest production which has already raised some serious eyebrows among fans and critics alike. Say what you will about them, but it’s admirable that they find there’s no topic too taboo for discussion.ĭirected by Ninja, Terence Neale and Saki Fokken Bergh Here we take a look at their “top” 5 music videos, because let’s be honest, each is as absurdly enjoyable as the next…for numerous reasons.Ĭommon themes include (but are not limited to ) drugs, violence, racism, bad boys, random dancing children alongside the highly sexualised youthfulness of Yolandi. Sure, you may only know them from the film Chappie, if at all, but they’re consistently racking up millions of views on YouTube for their inventive antics. Composed of rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser and the enigmatic DJ Hi-Tek, DA have often been called out for being controversial and inappropriate. Quirky and misunderstood as they may be, DA are nothing short of inventive, brilliantly outspoken and brave.
